Your voice matters: Foundational supports

Your voice matters: help create better supports for deaf and
hard-of-hearing children

The Australian Government wants to hear from you! Recent updates to National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) legislation mean that governments are looking into new ways to support children with disabilities beyond the NDIS – called Foundational Supports.

What Are Foundational Supports?
Foundational Supports are additional resources in the community designed to support people with disabilities. These supports will sit alongside the NDIS and other existing community services.

There will be different types of Foundational Supports and the initial focus is on general supports, which include supports like:

  • information and advice
  • self-advocacy
  • peer supports
  • capacity building.

Your Voice Matters

The government is seeking input from parents, families, and people with disabilities to help shape these Foundational Supports. Your insights will guide the design of these general supports that could benefit your child and family, and others in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Join the Conversation
The Department of Social Services (DSS) is hosting online consultations focusing on supports for children with developmental delays and disabilities. This is your chance to share what would make a difference for your family and others.

Questions to think about
DSS is asking people about what general foundational supports might look like and what is needed to better support people with disability. This includes:

  • Types of information and advice supports people use now and find most useful
  • What is needed to support people with disability, their families, carers and kin, to access information and advice about disability supports
  • What additional supports are needed for decision-making, self-advocacy and to connect with peers and others in the community
  • What types of programs have worked well to help communities better support people with disability
  • how organisations and non-government services can be more inclusive, accessible and welcoming for people with disability.
