Register Interest – Junior Science Academy for Deaf and Hard of Hearing kids: January 2025

Macquarie University’s Junior Science Academy (JSA) for Deaf and Hard of Hearing kids is back again this summer! Keep your child’s enthusiasm to learn alive over the long break and give them an opportunity to connect with new and old friends at our JSA DHH program. Proudly sponsored by the Australian Hearing Hub, Parents of Deaf Children (PODC) and JSA, our exciting and hands-on classes are accessible and tailored to meet your child’s needs, guaranteeing a great day full of learning and fun.

The January school holiday program will be held at Level 3 Australian Hearing Hub, 16 University Avenue, Macquarie University.

Classes include:

Slick Science, (Years 1-3)

Thursday, 16 January 2025

Explore different liquids and find out how their density effects which do and do not mix: learn how to make butter, create art using oil and water and make your own lava lamp.

Cost: Free

Crime Scene Investigation CSI, (Years 3-6)

Friday, 17 January 2025

Become a detective for the day: use your observation skills to examine the evidence of a crime scene for fingerprints, footprints, handwriting samples and view fibres under a microscope to solve the mystery.

Cost: Free

Making our DHH classes accessible is important to us; some of our key accessibility adjustments including providing deaf awareness training for staff, volunteer support, deaf mentors, adjusted lesson plans, small class sizes, assisted listening devices and Auslan interpreting.

Morning Tea/ Parent Information Session
We are excited to be able to welcome families with more opportunities to connect through our program. In collaboration with Parents of Deaf Children we will again be offering a morning tea/ information session for parents after sign in, from 9.30am-11.30am, and we hope you will be able to join us. Auslan interpreters will also be provided.

Regional Travel Scholarships
Thanks to our generous sponsors, we have a limited number of regional and remote sponsorship places to offer to eligible attendees in January. If you would like to learn more about this program, please indicate your interest in the form below, and a member of our team will contact you with more information.

Register Your Interest
Register your interest in the program by 27 November 2024 to receive an email invitation with a booking link. Places will first be offered to new families and then Parents of Deaf Children (PODC) Members, with any remaining places offered to returning families from the 4 December 2024. Places are limited and fill quickly, so please book as soon as possible. Please note that the JSA requires a minimum number of enrolments to run classes and will need to cancel classes in cases of low enrolment.
