Research participation – Enabling remote screening of childhood hearing loss using AI

Chatterbugs Study – National Acoustics Laboratories (NAL)

About the study:
We’re using a fun smart phone App to collect speech samples from around 1000 children (aged 2½ to 3½) with and without hearing loss. The goal is to develop an AI-powered convenient app, parents and caregiver can use at home to screen for hearing loss in young children by detecting particular patterns in their speech. This is an innovative study and the results of the study could help shape the future of hearing screening in children.

How it works:
• Parents of the participants register online:
• Participants will receive instructions to download the mobile app ‘Chatterbugs’.
• Children complete fun activities at home (takes ~20 minutes, can pause/resume).

Parents will receive a gift voucher on completion of the app.

Who can join?
• Children between 2 ½ and 3 ½ years old
• Children with or without hearing loss (or recurrent ear infections)
• Do not have a cochlear implant
• Hear/speaks English at least 3 days a week.
