Your child may be eligible for Australian Government funding through the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The Australian Government funds the NDIS, which offers early support to children with hearing loss younger than 9 years old and their families.

At your first appointment with Hearing Australia, the audiologist will discuss the NDIS with you and inform you about the NDIS early childhood partner in your local area. Your NDIS early childhood partner will support you in applying for the NDIS on your child’s behalf. Your child with permanent hearing loss can access the supports they need earlier through the NDIS Pathway Hearing Stream.

The NDIS has developed three guides for understanding supports for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Choosing an early intervention provider

Choosing an early intervention provider with expertise and experience with babies and young children with hearing loss is best. The providers listed in this section specialise in children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Alternatively, you can find an NDIS registered provider on the NDIS website. We have compiled a list of questions to ask the early intervention service providers you are considering.

If your child is not eligible for NDIS funding, the early childhood partner in your area can assist you to find other supports for your child.
