Session 4 - Informed choice

Decision aids

Decision aids can be a tool that helps you in your decision making process.

A lot of research has been done over recent years to help people make informed choices in a clear and logical way. Ways of reducing or minimizing cognitive biases has been part of this investigation.

Decision aids are tools that help people’s decision-making.

  • They are helpful when there is no clear best option.
  • They are also helpful when people value the benefits and risks of each option differently.
  • Decision aids improve people’s knowledge about their options and provide them with a clearer understanding of what matters most to them.
  • They might help improve people’s understanding of the benefits and risks of each option.
  • The research on decision aids has mainly been in healthcare, but the process is not limited to decisions about health.

In the ‘Additional Resources’ section of this session, we have included links to two reputable decisions aids developed by experts in this field. These decisions aids will walk you through the process we have outlined in this  final lesson.
