The early days after receiving your child’s diagnosis is never easy, and you are bound to have many questions.
You can find it hard to imagine what your child’s future will look like.
You might think more about what they might not be able to do, rather than what they will be able to do.
You want to fix the problem as quickly as possible and make things normal again.
Before you start thinking about the problems that you feel you need to fix, let yourself take a step back and remember the mental pictures of hope and optimism you had for your child’s future before you were given the diagnosis.
Use those mental images to frame your fundamental goals.
From there, you can start planning your functional and symptom-specific goals and make decisions about how you’ll pursue these goals with the help of family, friends, and the professionals that are available to support you along the way.
We encourage you to have conversations about your goals with your child’s team and see how they can support you in your decision making, and begin shaping solutions that will steer you towards achieving those goals.
