SignBaby DVDSofya Gollan, a well-known figure on ABC TV’s Play School has presented songs and stories in sign language for many years to the delight of young viewers around Australia. Sofya has a great understanding for what makes young children tick and has used Auslan with her own young hearing toddler to great success.Sofya and other early childhood communication specialists have collaborated together to produce a DVD ‘SignBaby’, an educational resource for those parents who want to communicate with their young baby before they can talk. Parents can teach their baby to sign starting right from birth. Most babies will start signing back between the ages of 7 to 12 months. “I love my work on Play School and it's fantastic to be able to use Auslan on the show. Kids love signing, especially to songs. It's a great way of getting to know your child, especially in the time before they can talk. I used signing with my own baby and I'm convinced it has helped make him the confident, communicative little boy he is now” Sofya recently stated. SignBaby draws from the knowledge and experience of linguists, speech pathologists and professional carers who share their experience of signing to young children in their professional practice. The DVD provides informative interviews from the professionals, outlining some of the fundamental benefits of signing to very small children. The SignBaby DVD covers a vocabulary of over 200 signs and a few simple nursery rhymes. You can visit the SignBaby website. Once in the Home page, select the "Getting started" menu. One
of the most frequently asked questions in our online group is about keeping hearing
aids and implants on babies. We have a pattern for a bonnet from Auditory
Verbal UK on our website but making these is a problem for some parents. We
recently found an Australian supplier whose bonnets might do the trick. They can be ordered online. |
