New Connections in Caulfield
New parent network in Melbourne
Posted: Wed, 9th May 2012
We are trying to establish broader local networks for families with children with hearing loss living in the inner south east region. (Although of course, any family wanting to attend is more than welcome!)
Date: Sunday 3 June 2012
Place: Caulfield South Community House (Cnr Jupiter and Kooyong Road)
This group is aiming to provide friendship and support both for the children and their siblings as well as re-enforce parental support networks.
For the children
Many children with hearing loss are attending mainstream schools and may not have much contact with other children with similar needs. The chance to mix with other kids can help the child to not feel like they are the only one. Regardless of where your child attends school or their preferred method of communication, everyone is welcome.
A mix of ages is anticipated and we hope that we can provide the framework for some fabulous new friendships.
The afternoon will have activities for the kids to get involved and have a good time.
For the parents
As each of us learned so many things in our journeys in parenting, we have gained lots of valuable knowledge that might be of benefit to another family. The ability to talk to another parent who understands hearing loss can provide an enormous amount of support.
The aim of these meetings are to give parents a chance to chat and share experiences both in terms of family life as well as ideas for the best way to advocate for your child at school and in society.
Depending on the preferences of the group, we can also provide guest speakers and presenters on various topics at a later date.
We want the afternoon to be fun and a good introduction for future family days. A Sunday afternoon has been chosen deliberately so that we can give fathers a chance to come along also. Dads often miss out on support groups due to the timing of events so we are hopeful that as many fathers as possible will also be able to attend.
