Our history
Parents of Hearing Impaired and Deaf Children in Australia (PHIDCOZ), an online support group for parents, was started by Ann Porter in February 2001. A website, named Aussie Deaf Kids, followed shortly after and provided a Resource Directory of links to good quality information for families on the World Wide Web.
A second online support group followed in September 2004 for parents raising a child with a unilateral hearing loss. By June 2007, the online support groups had over 300 members and the web site consistently received over 1 million hits each year.
Until September 2007, Aussie Deaf Kids was run on a voluntary basis and received no funding. This would not have been possible without the generous support of both parents and professionals who volunteered their time and expertise.
In September 2007, Aussie Deaf Kids was registered as a not-for-profit organisation in order to achieve its expanded vision of providing a comprehensive online resource for families raising a deaf child in Australia.
